Debi Gliori's Favourite Things

Apart from that, I also love to swim in the sea, even although here in Scotland, it’s invariably toe-curlingly, teeth-clenchingly cold; I love to play my fiddle with friends, but I also love to play my fiddle on my own in a room with acoustics that make me sound half decent; then there’s a great joy to be had in cooking something that tastes like heaven and then eating it, sitting round a dinner table with my family; and I love walking with Michael in the Scottish hills in winter; walking by the sea on a wild and windy day; waking up to the hush of a world covered in snow and not having to go anywhere other than out to my studio; the pleasures of work, because I am fortunate enough to truly enjoy what I do for a living – I feel so chuffed when I capture in words exactly what I was trying to say; after drawing and re-drawing and rubbing out and drawing again and re-drawing . . .

I love the moment when I finally manage to get down on paper an image of whatever it was I was trying to draw in all my previous attempts; then there’s the utter bliss of sinking into a hot bath at the end of a long day’s hill walking when my muscles ache and my head is full of visions of wild weather and high lonely places; I also love to invent a new and fabulous recipe for onions, garlic, tomatoes and the withered contents of the vegetable drawer; make, pack, carry to some gorgeous location and finally, eat a picnic with my family – we do a lot of extreme picnicking in all sorts of weathers; curl up by a log fire with a good book and an affectionate (if a tad whiffy) golden retriever; stop and breathe in the perfumes of our summer garden, with its peppery lupins, bridal orange blossom, velvety roses and heavy lilies; and finally, I love to come home, especially when I’ve been away for a while. Home is where I like to be best of all.

I love showing my illustrations to Michael, my partner. He sees my pictures before anybody else – in their raw, pencilly, blobby state, and halfway through their watercolour painting, all the way to the finished, camera-ready artwork. He’s always so encouraging, even when I’m awash in doubt and worry and what-ifs. I love that. I love how positive he is about my work. I always look forward to showing him new things I’ve done, each day.
